Choose To Thrive

Category

I have heard people saying when one thing goes wrong, everything starts going wrong. However, today I actually experienced this and it was not just one of those bizarre days where I couldn’t get anything done properly.

This was a bit more serious for me. It involved several appliances around the house suddenly deciding it was time for a break.

It started with my refrigerator. All of a sudden the inside light stopped working. I was in panic mode and hoped against hope it was a simple light issue and not a machine fault. Apart from all the food getting spoilt, I was also really trying to avoid a refrigerator repair job as I simply didn’t have the time or budget for it. Of course the worst case scenario of buying a new refrigerator was completely out of the question.

After some frantic searching on the internet, I tried some troubleshooting. I unplugged the refrigerator, plugged it in again and ensured there were no power issues. I also used the old school method of simply putting my hand on the sides of the refrigerator to feel for the usual vibrations. I could feel it and the fact that even after a while things seemed quite cool inside the refrigerator told me it was not a machine issue.

Well after a few calls here and there, I had a friend bring in a new bulb for my exact model from the nearest hardware store. He helped fix the bulb as well and thank my lucky stars the light came on as soon as I switched on my refrigerator once again. It was unplugged before changing the bulb.

I felt a sense of relief as I can’t imagine not having the refrigerator working for days before it gets repaired. Unfortunately though, my sense of relief soon faded when I realized my heater in my small work from home office was not working as it should.

I have one of those portable halogen heaters that swivel around slowly and distribute heat evenly. It is a simple heating solution for a small space like my makeshift home office. However, when I sat for my work, I noticed the heater was not swiveling. The fan from the heater was also making an unusual noise and was quite loud.

The heater itself was working though as I could feel the heat but it was definitely not functioning as it should have.

Now for the worst part. I tried fixing the heater as much as I could going through tutorials online on my mobile. However, nothing helped and I thought its not really that cold so this can be something I can do later. Anyways the portable heater was meant only for my workspace which I built for my work from home situation.

However, as soon as I sat for work and switched on my laptop, well guess what. It wouldn’t come on or boot up. It stayed at the Windows logo with those dots going round and round but absolutely nothing happened. It was my worst nightmare. All my files, data, clients waiting for their designs. All held hostage by my non-booting laptop.

I waited for more than 10 minutes before I forced shut the machine and tried booting it again. Same issue. Back to searching for a solution on my mobile. Most suggestions said to boot windows in safe mode and go from there. However, my laptop refused to even get to the safe mode screen. I waited and waited and waited.

Now I was really cursing my luck. First my refrigerator, then my heater and just when I thought things could not be worse, my laptop.

However, I read that sometimes when a windows update is going on it can take even couple of hours for the machine to boot and I remembered there was an update when I was shutting down the machine the previous night. So then I waited for a couple of hours patiently. Well – it did nothing. Still the dots going around in a circle.

This time though, I can again forced shut the machine and booted it once more. Thankfully this time I got the windows update notification with a percentage showing up. This went on for few minutes and finally my laptop was back on. It was crazy. The relief was incredible. I had no time to relax though as I had missed most of my work day and had to frantically get back to working.

So finally, after a day where it felt as if everything in my house needed repair, I am now back on the couch with my herbal tea, almost afraid of thinking what is going to go wrong next.

Also if you are wondering, the heater is not okay and has now stopped working completely.

I am Brave and Beautiful – a beauty movement that is sweeping the globe.

Colbie Caillat started it with her recent song and video called TRY. My blogging friend Megan of Brassy Apple wanted to push this movement along and invited women from all over to share what they looked like without make up and I joined in!!

Colbie’s song says, “Take your make up off. Let your hair down… Look into the mirror at yourself, Do you like you? Cause I like you… “

Megan and her friend Cobi of Peacefrom6pieces have been the team behind this whole project. Their worldwide vision included creating their own video inspired by the song TRY. The talent of Robbins Creative made it possible for them to pull it off. You have to click play and see the beauty and bravery displayed and you might even recognize a few faces in there.
I have joined with 101+ other blogging women from different backgrounds, religions, ethnicities, ages, shapes and sizes have decided to be Brave and Beautiful! You can join in this movement too by sharing what you look like without makeup on.
You don’t need a blog either!
Just tag your photo with #IamBraveAndBeautiful on Instgram and search the hashtag to see who else has joined in. ALSO, if you tag it with a second hashtag – #ColbieTRY we just might be able to get Colbie Caillat’s attention since she was the inspiration behind it all!
Are you brave and beautiful? I am, here I go!
No make up, no styling, no editing, no photoshop — this is me.

A few years ago I would have cringed at this image and deleted it outright (or at least erased the lines, softened the bags, deleted the blemishes and filled out the lips). Today, though, I LOVE this picture because it’s the very first one I’ve ever taken that captures what my children love so much:

the mother they see everyday.

It’s been a slow process, but over the last few years my children have helped me see how much I am loved and valued–not because of how I look or what I’ve accomplished–but simply because I am theirs.

And oh what that love has done.

When my children smile up at me, they don’t see the hair and enamel that are thinning and brittle after a decade of rampant bulimia in my teens and twenties like I sometimes do. They see their Momma who is calming them after a bad dream and rocking them to sleep with a lullaby.

When they throw their arms around my neck, they don’t see my double chin and extra moles they way I sometimes do. They feel love for the one who cares for and protects them.

When they climb up onto my lap and ask for their favorite story to be read ‘just one more time Momma,’ they don’t see the soft stomach or the chubby thighs the way I sometimes do. They feel the love of someone who made time just for them.

I have struggled with weight my whole life and have spent years destroying myself with powerful self loathing, hiding from cameras and depressively fantasizing about all of the amazing things that I could accomplish once the weight came off. But as I’ve slowly allowed to see myself the way my children see me … as my Father in Heaven and Savior Jesus Christ see me … and how my husband, family and friends see me … I’ve realized that I don’t have to wait for anything to be happy, loved or accepted.

The truth is that I’ve accomplished more in the last few years of my life than I have in decades–just the way I am. And while taking better care of myself and becoming more healthy are still goals that I work towards, I’ve realized how hollow the world’s standard of perfect-beauty-acceptance is.

I was elected to a prominent position witin our city not long ago that seemed so utterly out of my league a few years ago. After the vote came down, I realized that I’d sacrificed years of progress waiting for a version of perfection that was so destructive. The talent and abilities that landed me my new position were always there; I’d just bought into the lie that said that nothing short of perfect could ever be loved or valued.

How wrong I was.

So something funny has begun to happen ….

I am okay with seeing this girl in the mirror, all made up for a night out …

… and rolling out of bed with drool on my cheeks and some wicked bed head.
And I love her. I’m proud of her.
I’m seeing that thinning hair and teeth as a sign of a girl who walked away from bulimia before it destroyed her completely.
I see in that big nose, thin lips and square face the resemblance of the family members I love most who came before me.
I see in that squishy tummy with the c-section scars and stretch marks the proof that this broken, infertile woman who was never supposed to have kids is momma to six of them.
I see in those thick legs a woman who is strong and confident, chasing kids around and working outside her home to help provide.
I see a woman who is imperfect and flawed, yes, but a daughter of God who is loved, valued and cherished simply because I am me.
And me is good. And me is working on being better–not because I hate what I see–but because I’m loving her more everyday and wanting to treat her with more kindness and respect.

Now is the time to start watching for those inviting, organic accessories for your fall decor: corn stalks, grape vines, wheat bundles, and changing leaves.

88894034_sMxpdFkM_c

So how do you get those things for zero out of pocket if it’s not growing in your own yard?

Gleaning.

Do you know what it is? Have you ever done it?

Gleaning is basically collecting left over materials that the owner doesn’t want or need. For fall that means lots of opportunities to score left over wheat, corn stalks, grape vine, etc. after the main crop has been harvested.

If you’ve never tried it, you need to!

But before you start tromping through fields with scissors in hands, consider the following:

1. First and foremost, always always always ask before you take anything. Gleaning without permission is the love child of stealing and trespassing. Knock on the door or call the property owner and make sure it’s okay to glean.

2. If you don’t know who the owner is or how to get a hold of them, call the city or county recorder’s office and get the owner’s contact information.

3. Make sure you have an exact (or very close) address when you stop by or call a city/county clerk. The more information you provide, the quicker and easier it will be for them to help you.

BAD: “I’m looking for the property owner of that big field over by the freeway.”

GOOD: “I’m looking for the property owner of the field on the northeast corner of John Street and 80th Avenue.”

4. When you go to glean, be quick, be respectful, stay out of their way, bring your own equipment (scissors, garbage bags, etc.) and don’t ask for special accommodations. Remember: they’re doing you a favor.

5. Send a thank you note to anyone who helped you: the city clerk, the property owner, whatever. It only takes a few minutes and will make it much more likely that you’ll be welcomed back next year.

What and Where To Glean

My all-time fav:

1. WHEAT

Remember this project from the THRIVE archives?

100_0031

I made this project using gleaned wheat from my neighbor’s garden after she picked what she wanted. This would have run $20+ at a craft store after the coupon discount.

This year my neighbor didn’t plant wheat so I called the city recorder of the town where I saw a huge field that had just been harvested.

100_3102

Turns out the city owns that field and they gave me permission right then. Score!

100_3103

That tiny row of left over wheat right along the dirt patch yielded a bucketful. For wheat, oats or any other cereal grain, put the cut stems in a bucket—using a garbage bag for collection makes a huge mess and often breaks the stems.

2. CORN STALKS

corn.stalks

I use them every year on my front door and will this year, too (even though I’m planning some fun, big changes).

Talk to your to friends and neighbors with garden patches now about gleaning their left over stalks. Commercially harvested fields may now have a lot of stalks left over, but small patches that are harvested by hand are great places to look. Bring twine and hedge clippers to lop through and bundle your stalks. Green stalks will need a few weeks to dry completely and acquire that wonderful parchment color.

3. GRAPE VINE

pumpkin

Love, love, love.

But those shapes can get pricey, even with the wonderful 40% off coupons. Making your own shapes is easier than you may think so look around. Ask neighbors, friends, etc. if you can help trim back vines when their grapes have been harvested.  They get some help and you get the raw materials to make wreaths, swags, frames, pumpkins, whatever. Win, win.

4. LEAVES

SANY1296

They’re pretty much everywhere which makes this easy. Picking up leaves at a park or along a public walk way is usually no big deal. If you’re worried, it never hurts to call the local city public works department and double check.  If you see great leaves on private property, again–always ask before collecting! I’ve seen great leaves on lawns while I’m out running errands, pulled over and gone and knocked on doors before.

My favorite way to use leaves is to string them together on twine or fishing line for a simple, pretty bunting.

I usually store leaves in between the pages of large books while they dry out. The flattened, leathery leaves are easier to use for projects than the more brittle, curled shape you usually get with regular air drying.

5. CORN HUSKS

husk.pics Images: 1. Growing Corn 2. Amazon.com

Sure, you could go guy these at the grocery store, but you can also just save those husks after your next bbq. Trim off the thick, curved bottom end and press the individual husks in between book pages (just like leaves) so they dry smooth and flat. Husks are so under appreciated and versatile. Seriously, make sure you save some.

So go put some scissors, gloves and a bucket in your car and try your hand at gleaning!

Dress up mylar balloons with vinyl designs (Silhouette CAMEO) - Choose To Thrive

Graduation. End of the year.

It’s almost here.

Time for teacher appreciation gifts, commencement bouquets and graduation parties.

** Cue dollar store décor–that blessedly cheap haven of all things seasonal.**

Well, seasonal and completely generic.

Or not ….

I figured if I only had a few bucks to throw towards celebrating I might as well jazz it up using vinyl scraps and my Silhouette CAMEO.

Didn’t know you could dress up balloons?

Yup. You totally can.

And if you’re going to bust out the Silhouette, how cool would it look to have those balloons decked out in your grad’s mascot? Or name? Or both?

Graduation could look like this:

Or this:

Or this:

Dress up mylar balloons with vinyl designs (Silhouette CAMEO) - Choose To Thrive

And celebrating that college acceptance letter could look like this:

SONY DSC

Lots and lots of possibilities. Lots.

Add vinyl to mylar balloons.7

Two words, people: mass rad.

You can import the school mascot/logo into your Silhouette library and trace the design or use a shape from the Silhouette store. Wording is simple using the free download font Collegiate Bold.

Application is straight forward, but here’s a quick video on how not to pop the dang things.

And while you’ve got the CAMEO out, why not use up a few more scraps to customize some snazzy dollar store gifts to match?

SONY DSC

Cute, customized and crazy cheap.

Me likey.

Congrats class of 2013!

Bee Mine Shirt

Have you seen this super cute Valentine’s Day printable designed by Aly over at Entire Eventful?

Bee Mine Valentine

Love, love the chalk board goodness.

Well Aly asked a few of us bloggers to put our own spin on her fun design—a sort of “One Printable, Five Ways” type of thing.

And because I’m a Silhouette nerd, I had all kinds of fun making a free cutting file to use for clothing or vinyl.

Free "Bee Mine" Silhouette cutting file available by emailing choosetothriveblog@gmail.com

A few minutes later I busted out the heat transfer vinyl and jazzed up an old black shirt just in time for kid #3 to wear for her class party.

Be Mine Valentines Day Shirt

This would be so cute on pillows, a tote bag, or homemade valentines.

If you’d like the Silhouette file, you can download it HERE for personal use.

Holy cow everyone. We’ve got a week.

Just. One. Week.

You ready?

Have you been recycling old shirts, chopping up boxes and turning cake pans into stars? Have you found awesome deals on line and scored some great deals? I hope so.

But if you’re like me and still have a few items on your shopping list (plus the never ending need for more of those staples), make a conscious effort to save money AND support your local businesses.

SONY DSC

Why?

Because I’m an official in my city and can tell you how much local businesses drive our economy. I’ve seen first hand how money spent in local stores impacts our communities several times more than online sales. You want more money for roads-schools-police in your neighborhood? Shop local.  You want lower property taxes and bond costs? Shop local. When Main Street shops get overlooked, the recovery for all of us is slower.

And stop – before you go there – I’m here to myth-bust about local being more expensive.  Shopping local isn’t just a noble idea, but a savvy way to save. You really can get awesome deals. Really.

Bottom line: you gotta hit DownEast.

Yes, they’ve got amazing deals on up-scale catalog furniture—they’re famous for that and their selection rocks.

2012-11-030

But I’ve got four – FOUR – great reasons to swing by THIS WEEK and in 2013 even if you’re on a shoe string budget like me and not in the market for a new couch:

1. CLOTHES

DownEast has the cutest, comfiest, most affordable stand-up-in-the-wash-like-a-champ clothing staples like camis and layering tees that everyone needs.

2012-11-031

Finding affordable clothes that are actually modest and cute is getting harder and harder. That’s why I’ve fallen in LOVE their in-house DownEast Basics line.

DownEast-Basics-Logo_Hi-Res2

I have two daughters who are crazy tall with wicked cases of plumbers butt. Since I have yet to make camis and tees successfully out of cardboard, these were at the top of  my list. Plus it buys me a little more time with those shirts that are getting a little too short. See?

SONY DSC

Baby girls was ticked when I told her it was time to retire her favorite black tee. Add a DownEast lace cami and problem solved.

Ah, way better.

This lace one was under $5 and layering tees are 2/$15 right now. Yeah, I’m stocking up. Mr. Thrive loves the price and everyone at church and school appreciates that my girls are no longer mooning them.

DownEast also has designer denim and accessories for 60-80% off what your kids want you to fork out at the mall. And when those cute jeans that you or your daughter want are high two figures (or even three), slashing that price by way more than half gets your attention very quickly. It’s all name brand stuff, but the prices are so low that I’m seriously not allowed to say them out loud … or in print … or even show you pics. I’ve been in their stores several times over the last few weeks and can tell you I checked it all out … and saw the prices … and maybe drooled a little bit since we’re Rock What Ya Got at our house and I’m not used to having “cool” stuff be in my price range – ever.

SONY DSC

So don’t worry about the mysterious hey-I-can’t-tell-you-the-brand-names-thing. Let’s just think of it as the designer blinged-out denim Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. Or the designer blinged-out denim brands that I could tell you about, but then I’d have to …. well, you get the idea.

2. DESIGNER from-the-huge-catalog-companies LINENS, HOME DÉCOR, and KIDS STUFF

(wait … that’s probably #2, 3 and 4. 🙂

DownEast gets the overstocks, seconds and discontinued items from some of the biggest catalog and department stores.  Monogramed 300 thread count sheets with the wrong letter or kids backpacks with the wrong name.  No biggie. Five minutes with a seam ripper and you’ve got sheets-curtains-bedding-backpacks-suitcases-lunch boxes-pillows-you-name it for half of what you’d spend on the cheapy generics at the box stores. Yeah, half. At least. And the quality kicks butt.

SONY DSC

I’ve been on the look out for new sheets for my girls’ room after kid #6 went all Edward Scissorhands on us, but I have completely struck out at thrift stores and online. Again, cardboard is not an option so I’m looking for cheap. Yup … found a complete set (flat, fitted, shams) at DownEast  for thrift store prices. Perfect color, too.

3. HOLIDAY DECOR

2012-11-028

Do you need stockings still? Or are you thinking that you’ll need to replace them next year if you can find a good sale after Christmas? They’re 50% right now. That means stockings like these are $2.50 – $5 each. They’re thick and heavy and will last for years to come. My favorite is the red and white striped wool number.

But confession: no one in my house is named Jean-Luc.

These were $30 in the catalog and I snagged the 100% wool yummieness for way less that I could have found the fabric even with a coupon (under $5!). Since I don’t have any old wool sweaters or friendly sheep around, this worked out handy. And kid #4 who has a thing for snowmen? Snagged that one for him for $2.50.

I also found this ridiculously cute Santa sack for under $5.

2012-11-27

And confession … it’s not the right name (although you may just find yours!)

But … you got it. It’s a cinch to cover or remove and I know the kids are going to freak out when they see that Santa left his sack at our house.

4. AWESOME CLEARANCE & WEEKLY SALES

I’m a THRIVE-r so I went straight for the clearance and sales racks.

Holy cow. Can I just show you my score?

Kid #3’s backpack was a $10 clearance find from Wallys. It was made out of paper (apparently) and lasted us all of four months. I found this extra-thick-padding-and-reinforced-seams backpack AND matching lunch box with the easy-washable-so-you-don’t-get-the-funky-sour-milk-smell liner that she’ll love. Catalog price for the backpack alone was $40. DownEast had it for $11.99. Catch one of their awesome sales and you’ll pick it up for 30-50% off that like I did. And the lunch box? Picked that up for $3.

2012-11-029

But kid #3’s name isn’t Gaby. Or Sophi. Big whoop. My seam ripper took care of both in just a few minutes. I could even just cover over the stitching with a cute applique or name tag. Such an easy fix.

Or how about this crazy-cute sleeping-bag-blanket-roll? I’ve seen these in popular children’s catalog and they’re $80+.

SONY DSC

Yup … a mere $80. Kid #6 really, really wants one of these for Christmas. Thanks to DownEast’s low prices + great sales, I got the whole furry puppy head, sleeping bag and paws for less than a Pillow Pet. Of course no, my daughter isn’t a Paiyton. I’m going to turn on White Christmas after the kids go to bed and take care of that. I’ll have that name off before anyone gets their life saved by Phil Davis. Easy peasy.

I even did something for myself that I haven’t done in months … I bought a new shirt. I had big, big plans to hack apart a sheet and refashion the heck out of it, but I’m running short on time and wanted something special to wear to church for our Christmas program. I figured I’d grab a cheap-o shirt at the thrift store … or Wallys … or Tar-jay. Instead I found this $10 number that looks awesome even when I’ve been caring kid #6 around all day.

SONY DSC

I may have worn it three days in a row over the last week already. I get compliments all the time which is a really big deal for me. Not because I’m vain, but because I usually am so focused on making sure the kids are covered that I never take care of me. Any other moms out there guilty, too? And while I’m so proud of how my kids look at Christmas or Easter, I usually sit next to them in something worn out and frumpy. This year I realized how important it is to treat myself with the same kindness and respect that I give my family. If it was important for my family to look nice for the holidays, it should be nice for me to as well. Finding a shirt for myself that didn’t make me feel like I was “taking away” from my family’s needs made me float. Turns out stick-to-the-basics pricing can still be cute, too.

So skip the traffic at the malls and box stores.

Skip the expense of rush of shipping online.

Check out DownEast for those Christmas items still on your list and save yourself some of that well earned money.

*Disclaimer: I received a gift card to shop at DownEast, but all opinions, stories about my daughter’s plumber’s butt, plans to watch White Christmas, hygiene-pushing  “hey-I-really-love-this-shirt-and-seriously-live-in-it” confessions and civic-geek passion for shopping local are 100% mine.

As I mentioned in my last post, me and my kiddos are excited to share what we’re going to BAKE, MAKE, DECORATE and also SHOP this holiday season. This week we’re in DECORATE Land and, true to my word, I’m letting the kids call the shots.

And I gotta admit … it’s tough.

Why?

Is it because I’ve got some awesome ideas on my Pinterest boards?

Sure.

And because I’m pretty crafty and I’ve been planning for months to make stuff?

Yup.

But when I’m really honest I’ll tell you that I want my house to look awesome-wonderful-color coordinated-festive-wow-she’s-amazing-even-though-they’re poor when my friends come over because it helps my self esteem. Letting go of that part of my vanity in favor of letting my kids find their own magic was harder than I thought.

But this ‘kids in charge’ thing has been awesome.

I drug out the Christmas bins over Thanksgiving weekend and sat the kids down to make a plan.

Plan? What’s a plan, mom?

They just wanted to go nuts and start throwing things up. And I almost ruined the whole dang thing by insisting on them planning their spontaneous holiday decorating. When I finally got out of the way and let them welcome Christmas on their own terms, I had the funnest night in a long time.

And so the kids claimed my for-the-entry-way-only mini trees and hauled them down to their rooms. And decorated the heck out of them. And added gobbs and gobbs of extra colored lights. And they were so stinkin’ proud of how they turned out.

See?

And they insisted on using every ornament – every.single.one —on the tree in the living room. I think some potted poinsettias, candy cane pens, a glitter tree headband and wooden power lines from my son’s model railroad also made it on there, too.

Even the old-metal-hanger-tinsel-star that Mr. Thrive and I made after we got back from our honeymoon wound up on the tree, too.

Haven’t seen that thing in forever. Does seem oddly appropriate, though.

And after a solid hour of Christmas music, the kids were in the mood for something a little more upbeat from mom’s playlist. Done. And man did these kids have a blast rocking out and decorating away to 2012’s newest holiday anthem: Gangnam Style.

When they were all done, our Christmas tree looked like this:

A department store “Holiday Dream Tree” this is not.

And my kids’ lovely décor will never, ever make the rounds on Pinterest. As a blogger, that should be a big no-no.

But six kiddos giggled and laughed and rode air horses late into the night while this happy momma snapped pics and finally let go again of that reoccurring feeling of sadness for what I can’t give them. What we can create together as a family is more than enough and I’ve got the pictures and video to remind me when I forget again.

There’s been lots of glue gun action and sewing over the weekend as my kids had fun bossing mom around.

We’ve even got a new holiday playlist on iTunes that we’ve been rocking out to … more Gangnam Style, The Piano Guys, Justin Bieber, the Gummy Bear song and even some Jingle Bell Rock. The rest of this week I’ll be posting the fun projects that we made together to decorate our entryway, faux mantel, tree and walls. Bring on the cardboard, hangers, and repurposed old t-shirt goodness … Gangnam style, of course.
